Although my domestic flight from Dunedin to Christchurch wasn't overly comfortable, I have nothing by praise for the Air New Zealand Star Alliance International crew that flew me from Christchurch to Sydney last night. They offered me a space in the back row (which I chilled in with leg room by myself). Although they forgot my meal (as I was in a different seat), they heated up a meal + extras for me, including a huge cup of Johnny Walker Whiskey, and an additional pie just before leaving. It's moments like these I feel proud to be a kiwi.
Once I got to Sydney, I picked up my luggage, passed through border control easy, and purchased a super cheap vodafone SIM card. This'll keep me online throughout this trip.
After my trip to Sydney earlier this year, everything is very easy to navigate. I trained into town and set myself up at Casa Central Backpackers. To be honest, it wasn't the nicest place, as it was an older type building with very little luxuries, however what do you expect for the price. Lovely staff though.
As my room had no aircon, I decided to go for a walk through town. What was going to be a walk around the block turned into a trip through Chinatown on towards Darling Harbour. Here I saw a "hard case" group of African American street performers entertaining outside iMax. They were very quick witted, and worth the look.
After the show, I moved back towards my Accom via a gelato joint. I finished this pretty quickly in the heat, and felt like a cold one before hitting the hay. Unfortunately I couldn't find a bar with live music, however as I walked into "The Great Southern Hotel" (just down the road), an English guy at the bar with a bit of a slur exclaimed that he bought me beer and a jäger bomb. How could I say no to that. I only stayed for a couple of drinks, but made friends and had a few laughs with him and his female friend from Sweden before cruising back to my bed for an early train ride to Tamworth in a few hours. A truely great start to what I'm sure will be an epic trip.
